Not so long ago, coloring one's hair was kept quiet, a secret between a woman and her hairdresser, meant to keep grays from showing.

Times have changed, though, and now both women and men change their hair color like hats or belts. Fusion Color Bar in Jefferson Valley has taken advantage of this change in attitude, and is opening the first salon of its kind, specializing only in hair coloring.

Opened by Mahopac resident Rocky Plateroti, who also owns Artista Salon in Scarsdale, the color bar is an economical new way to dye your hair. For only $44.90, Fusion Color Bar offers customers a consultation with the salon's master colorista to determine the best color. During this consultation, the master colorista, a fully-trained expert in hair coloring, will take note of the client's history and desires before combining the perfect custom dye. The coloring mixture will be matched directly to the client, and applied by one of the salon's coloristas, who are specially trained by Plateroti in color application.

Once the process is complete, the client is free to dry and style their own hair in the back of the salon, in a special self-service section with complimentary use of some of the salon's retail products. Clients can ask their coloristas for tips and hints about styling, but the actual process is up to the client so they can immediately see how their hair will look in everyday life.

For follow up visits, clients can opt to have a colorista reapply, or they can choose the more economical at-home version. Clients can call ahead and have their custom color mixed and waiting for them to take home. For $24.90, Fusion Color Bar will include a jar of the client's personalized color, an application brush, gloves and directions on how to self-apply the dye. To make it even more affordable, clients who return the reusable jar to Fusion will receive $2 off their next purchase. For just a few dollars more than drug-store dye kits, customers can have a perfectly customized hair color.

Giving clients the choice between having their hair dyed in the salon or at home helps embody the salon's mission.

"Fusion gets its name from our fusion of creativity, choice and value," Plateroti said. "We believe everyone deserves excellent customer service, and we're here to provide our clients with choices about their hair color." As a result, Fusion is available for walk-ins, allowing clients to be seen immediately without an appointment. "We know how busy today's customers are," Plateroti said. "And we want them to know that they're not here for us; we are here for them, any time they want a quick change or treatment."

The salon's first client, Mahopac News Photographer Tabitha Pearson Marshall, was thrilled with her experience, and being able to go in without an appointment was a highlight.

"I'm very spur-of-the-moment, and always have been, and this caters to that," she said. A busy working mother, Marshall points out, "My time is all over the place, so I really like the idea. I'd recommend it to anyone who does at-home coloring often. It's just so much better to have the custom color that could really enhance, rather than just be OK."

Though she notes she still loves her regular salon, Marshall is one of the 20 percent of hair-dyeing individuals that dyes both at the salon and at home. Fusion Color Bar works perfectly for her lifestyle, allowing her the option of doing either one, and always having the same great color.

The dyes are specially imported from Italy, and each is infused with Plateroti's special serum, which was also developed by Plateroti's dermatologist brother and his Eastern medicine specialist sister-in-law, is an all-natural product that keeps free-radicals out of the dye, and helps to protect and moisturize the hair. It is, of course, only available at Fusion Color Bar. Colors of all types are available, from subtle to dramatic, and everything in between.

For Plateroti, though, one of the greatest parts of starting Fusion Color Bar is being able to give back to his community.

"I know this area. My wife teaches here, my kids go to school here, we all shop and live here," said Plateroti, who has lived in Mahopac for a decade. In an effort to give back, Fusion Color Bar will give local PTOs $100 for every 250 proofs of purchase of their at-home kit. Patrons should give the proof of purchase to their PTO.

"I felt that this was the best way to give continuously and to give schools the flexibility to buy whatever they most need," Plateroti said.

With their grand opening ceremony scheduled on May 14, Fusion Color Bar is off to a great start. Until June, they are offering 50 percent off a client's first treatment to make it even more affordable, and they hope to start a men's night every other week in the near future. Whether you color on a regular basis or want to try it for the first time, the color bar is worth a quick drop-in.

My experience at fUSION color bar was great. They treated me like a person and not a number. They walked me through the whole process from start to finish. The master colorist, which are called “colorista’s” were trained by creator and master stylist Rocky Plateroti, who also owns a full service salon in Scarsdale called Artista for hair. There work done was high end salon quality without the huge dent it puts in my purse. Affordable beautiful color for the everyday working women

I love fusion color bar!! It was such a great experience!! When I went in I didn't know what to do with my hair, I hated everything about it! The master colorist and colorista sat and talked to me about options and made me feel super comfortable. They started off by giving me a 'well water treatment' that blew me out of the water, my hair has never looked and felt so great. Then we decided to go with some highlights that I can’t express to you just how much I LOVE it!
I hope everyone gets to go in and experience how wonderful the whole staff is, and more importantly, how wonderful their work is!!
    Thanks FUSION!
I'm sending in a ton of people your way :)
