13 Hallocks Run: A perfect home for raising kids and entertaining
When they purchased their home in 2007, Liam and Tara Harrington fell in love with Somers and with the Toll Brothers community. In this private cul-de-sac complex, 97 homes share a pool, tennis courts, and a clubhouse where the community holds meetings and holiday parties for homeowners.
"There are really beautiful houses here," Liam Harrington said. "But the selling point for me was the community. More than 90 of the houses have families with children in them. We bought the house to grow into." This dream came true when Harrington and his wife, Tara, became the proud parents of a baby daughter several years after purchasing the house.
Their home, in particular, is family friendly because of all the work completed on the backyard. In addition to upgrading some of the appliances inside the home, the Harringtons extended the backyard by taking out some trees and leveling the land.
"Now, there's more room to play catch, and to let children play outside," he said.
In addition to being perfect for a family, the home is also excellent for entertaining. The dramatic, two-story entrance hall with curving staircase sets the tone the instant the front door is opened. For more formal entertaining, a large living room is just to the left, while the distinguished dining room is to the right. Crown molding features throughout most of the home, adding a subtle hint of taste in every room. A study or den, with huge solid cherry wood built-ins, rounds off this sophisticated section of the house, and is perfect for the busy professional who works from home or sometimes meets with clients in their home.
For more casual entertaining, the enormous eat-in kitchen is truly the heart of the house. An island with seating at the counter provides plenty of extra seating, and the open floor plan allows for plenty of communication with guests in the two-story family room. It's this room that Liam calls his favorite.
"We spend a lot of time here, and it blends into the kitchen area really well; it's really half of the first floor. We spend 80 percent of our time there, entertaining friends and family. It looks out onto the back patio and yard, and everything flows nicely together." A wood-burning stove gives the space an even greater sense of warmth.
Upstairs, the master suite is exquisite. The spacious bedroom has a private bathroom with whirlpool tub and separate shower. In addition to a large sitting room in the front of the bedroom, an attached dressing room gives added privacy for morning routines. Dual walk-in closets complete the feeling of luxury that permeates the space. Two additional bedrooms are perfect for children or guest rooms, and one of these opens onto a double-sink bathroom, the third in the house.
The house also features a bar for even more entertaining in the recreation room, which has a cozy corner off to the side for a fitness area. The three-car garage gives plenty of room for automobiles and storage.
But for Liam and Tara, it all comes back to spending time with his family. Though they are looking forward to moving to be closer to family and Tara's practice as a pediatrician with WestMed, he'll always look back at his time on Hallocks Run fondly.
"We have the house that everyone wants to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas in," he said. "We can accommodate for the holidays, and the house is secluded and private. We can host five people or 20 people." The flow of the house, and not just the size, is what makes this type of entertaining possible, and Liam has been certain to take advantage of that over the past four years.
"When I move out and close the door for the last time," he said, "I'm going to think about all the holidays we had in the house, and all the time we spent together around the fireplace."
